Job Security

Last Thursday was my last official day as an employee of the Commerce Department's 2020 United States Census. As I have mentioned before, I really enjoyed my enumerator job and was sorry to have only been asked to work in the final phase. So I was both surprised and pleased to receive a notice yesterday to check my job status. When I did, this is what I found. Apparently, when the next census rolls around in ten years, I have a good chance of being offered a job again. Considering my age in ten years, this could be very "interesting" to say the least. It would certainly be nice to think that I will still be hale and hearty in ten years to do this again. And now that I see that the Commerce Department has made note that I am "experienced," it gives me something to strive for and look forward to. As we age it is so nice to be able to believe that we can continue to have value to our community and our country. Now that I am "experienced," maybe I can be a supervisor next time since maybe driving a car around on back roads may not be the best thing for me to be doing. But, who knows. There are people doing all sorts of amazing things, like running marathons and hang gliding in their late eighties. If they can do that, then maybe I will still be able to be a census taker again, too. I am saying this a bit tongue in cheek, but it is great to have a goal for the next ten years: to stay healthy in mind and body so I can be employed again by the Department of Commerce, Bureau of the Census.
